A moody, atmospheric depiction of dusk in Martyshkino, rendered in muted ochre and olive tones by Russian Symbolist Konstantin Somov.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, produced this work during his formative years. The piece depicts a quiet, rural scene in Martyshkino, a location near Saint Petersburg. Somov employs a specific colour palette dominated by ochre, deep olive, and muted yellow tones to capture the fleeting light of dusk. The composition is structured around a small, reflective stream that cuts through the foreground, drawing the eye toward the silhouetted tree line in the distance.
Unlike the objective realism favoured by many of his contemporaries, Somov infuses this scene with a subjective, melancholic quality. The brushwork is deliberate, with the vertical strokes in the water suggesting a sense of stillness and reflection. The sky, rendered in textured, horizontal washes, provides a contrast to the darker, more opaque forms of the earth and vegetation. This work demonstrates the artist's early interest in the atmospheric potential of the natural world, moving away from literal representation toward a more evocative, mood-driven aesthetic.
Somov often explored themes of isolation and the passage of time in his work. Here, the absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interplay between the fading light and the encroaching shadows. The technical execution, combining watercolour with gouache, creates a matte finish that enhances the sombre, twilight atmosphere. This print captures the subtle gradations of tone present in the original, preserving the delicate balance between the illuminated water and the surrounding darkness. It is a representative example of the Russian Symbolist approach to the natural world, where the environment acts as a mirror for internal states rather than a mere subject for documentation.
