A modernist interpretation of the New Mexican desert, featuring rhythmic, sculptural mountain forms and a warm, earthy palette.
Marsden Hartley painted this work during his time in New Mexico, a period that marked a shift in his approach to the American environment. Having spent years in Europe engaging with avant-garde circles, Hartley returned to the United States with a desire to capture the raw, geological character of the Southwest. This composition reflects his interest in the structural qualities of the terrain, where the mountains are rendered as massive, rhythmic forms that dominate the frame.
The painting displays a rhythmic repetition of rounded, undulating hills that fill the canvas. Hartley uses a palette of ochre, terracotta, and soft blues to define the arid environment. The sky is treated with similar sculptural weight, featuring clouds that echo the curves of the earth below. At the base of the central mountain, a small cluster of buildings suggests the presence of the Cash Entry Mines, providing a sense of scale against the imposing geological features. The brushwork is deliberate, building up the surface with a tactile quality that emphasises the physical presence of the rock formations.
Hartley avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, decorative arrangement that prioritises the formal relationships between shapes. This stylistic choice aligns with his broader interest in abstraction, yet he remains grounded in the specificities of the New Mexican geography. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing on the essential geometry of the scene. It is a study of mass and volume, capturing the stillness of the high desert through a modern lens. The interplay between the warm earth tones and the cooler sky creates a balanced visual experience, inviting the viewer to observe the interplay of light and shadow across the rugged terrain.
