This work is a six-panel folding screen, or byōbu, executed in the suiboku-ga tradition. Sōami, a painter and connoisseur in the service of the Ashikaga shogunate, utilised ink wash techniques to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The composition draws upon the classical Chinese theme of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a subject that held significant cultural weight in the Muromachi period.

The artist employs varying densities of ink to suggest the recession of space. Soft, blurred forms of distant mountains emerge from the negative space of the paper, while more defined, darker brushwork characterises the foreground trees and rocky outcrops. This technique, known as haboku or splashed ink, allows the viewer to perceive the shifting conditions of light and moisture within the scene. The screen functions as a continuous narrative, guiding the eye across the panels through a sequence of gentle slopes, hidden waterfalls, and quiet inlets.

Sōami was deeply influenced by the aesthetics of Zen Buddhism and the Chinese Southern Song style. His approach avoids rigid outlines, favouring instead the subtle modulation of tone to evoke a meditative state. The absence of colour focuses attention on the texture of the brushstrokes and the balance between solid form and empty space. This screen is a representative example of the ink painting tradition that defined the artistic output of the Higashiyama period, where the interplay of nature and human presence is rendered with restraint and precision. The work invites quiet observation, mirroring the contemplative practices associated with the tea ceremony and the design of Zen gardens, both of which Sōami helped to shape during his career.
