Fyodor Vasilyev, a Russian painter who died young, created this landscape painting. Vasilyev's short life, cut short by tuberculosis, produced a relatively small but significant body of work. He is considered a precursor to Russian Impressionism, although his style retains elements of realism. He had a significant influence on later Russian artists, including Isaac Levitan. This painting depicts a rural scene, possibly near Pargolovo, a locality near St. Petersburg. A dirt path leads the viewer's eye into the composition, with figures scattered throughout the middle ground. A woman carries something on her head along the path.
