A soft, atmospheric pastel study by Claude-Émile Schuffenecker, featuring a rural field and a prominent orange tree rendered in warm, golden tones.
Claude-Émile Schuffenecker, a contemporary and associate of Paul Gauguin, produced this work during a period of experimentation with colour and form. The composition captures a rural scene, dominated by a central, distinctively shaped orange tree that acts as a visual anchor against the surrounding field. The artist employs a soft, stippled application of pastel, which creates a hazy, atmospheric quality across the entire surface.
In the foreground, a lone figure is depicted working in the field, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the rural environment. The palette relies on warm, golden tones for the grass, contrasted by cooler blues and greens in the shadows and the distant foliage. Schuffenecker avoids sharp outlines, preferring instead to build the image through layered marks and subtle shifts in hue. This technique allows the light to appear as if it is diffusing through the air, a common interest among artists of the late nineteenth century who sought to move beyond the strict observation of Impressionism toward more subjective interpretations of nature.
The work reflects the artist's interest in the Synthetist approach, where the simplification of forms and the use of flat colour areas were prioritised. Despite the soft texture of the pastel medium, the structure of the scene remains clear. The distant buildings and the line of trees provide a sense of depth, while the foreground rocks ground the composition. This piece offers a glimpse into the stylistic concerns of the Pont-Aven circle, where artists explored the expressive potential of colour and the simplification of the natural world.
