This pastoral scene by François Boucher captures a moment of idyllic charm, depicting a young couple harvesting cherries in a lush garden setting. The soft colours and delicate brushwork exemplify the Rococo style.
François Boucher (1703-1770) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher, who worked in the Rococo style. Boucher is known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, allegories, and pastoral scenes. He was a favourite painter of Madame de Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV. Boucher was extremely prolific, producing around 1,000 paintings, as well as numerous drawings, etchings, and designs for tapestries and porcelain. 'Landscape with Cherry Picker' depicts a bucolic scene with two figures engaged in the activity of harvesting cherries. A young man is perched on a ladder, reaching into the branches of a tree laden with fruit. Below him, a young woman holds out her apron to catch the falling cherries. The setting is a lush, verdant garden, complete with potted plants, gardening tools, and a discarded hat and coat. The composition is light and airy, with a soft, diffused light that enhances the romantic atmosphere. The colours are delicate and pastel-like, with a focus on greens, pinks, and blues. The brushwork is loose and painterly, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity. The overall effect is one of charm and grace, typical of Boucher's Rococo style.
