A six-panel screen painting by Mori Shūhō, featuring a mountain landscape rendered in ink on a gold-leaf background.
This six-panel folding screen by Mori Shūhō demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Maruyama-Shijō school. The composition utilises a gold-leaf background to create a sense of expansive space, a common feature in Japanese decorative arts of the Edo period. The artist employs ink washes to define the craggy mountain forms, while delicate brushwork details the pine trees and the small pavilion nestled within the valley floor.
The work balances negative space with detailed natural elements. The gold leaf reflects light, shifting the appearance of the scene depending on the viewing angle and the ambient light in the room. The mountains are rendered with a focus on texture, using varied ink densities to suggest mass and geological structure. The mist, represented by the absence of ink against the gold ground, serves to separate the foreground from the distant peaks, creating a sense of atmospheric depth.
Mori Shūhō, a student of Maruyama Ōkyo, adopted the school's emphasis on direct observation of nature, though he often integrated these naturalistic elements into the traditional format of the gold-screen painting. The pavilion, though small, provides a human element to the vast mountain scene, inviting the viewer to imagine a quiet retreat within the wilderness. The screen functions as both a structural element in a room and a piece of visual storytelling. The choice of gold leaf provides a sense of luxury, while the ink painting maintains a grounded, meditative quality. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink work, preserving the contrast between the metallic surface and the organic forms of the mountainside.
