Sesson Shūkei, a Zen monk and painter of the Muromachi period, developed a distinct style that departed from the rigid conventions of the Chinese-influenced ink wash tradition. This work displays his characteristic approach to composition, where jagged, expressive rock formations dominate the visual field.
