A landscape under a setting sun by Henri-Edmond Cross, this oil on canvas painting uses distinct brushstrokes to create a textured surface and capture the effect of light and colour.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in 1856, is associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, developed a style characterised by the use of small, distinct dots of colour, known as pointillism, to create an image. This technique aimed to achieve a greater degree of luminosity and colour mixing than traditional methods. Cross's later works moved away from strict pointillism, featuring broader, more expressive brushstrokes. He died in 1910. This oil on canvas painting depicts a landscape under a setting sun. The composition is divided into horizontal bands of colour, with a field of red flowers in the foreground, followed by a band of yellow and green vegetation. Above this, a pink and yellow area suggests a beach or open ground. The background features dark blue trees and a lighter blue sea, with a bright yellow sun dominating the sky. The brushstrokes are visible and distinct, contributing to the painting's textured surface and the overall effect of light and colour.
