A Dutch Golden Age painting depicting the biblical expulsion of Hagar, set within a detailed, atmospheric landscape featuring classical ruins.
This work by Jacob Symonsz Pynas depicts the biblical narrative of Hagar and Ishmael being sent away by Abraham. The composition follows the tradition of the Dutch Italianate painters, who integrated classical ruins and Mediterranean light into their northern European sensibilities. Pynas, a member of the Pre-Rembrandtists, demonstrates a clear interest in atmospheric effects and the construction of space through layered foliage.
The scene is dominated by a large, dark tree on the right, which frames the figures of Abraham, Hagar, and the young Ishmael. Their interaction is placed in the foreground, near the crumbling stone structures that suggest an ancient, weathered setting. The middle ground opens into a valley, leading the eye toward a distant hill crowned with architectural remains. This use of a repoussoir element, the large tree, creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the narrative space.
The palette relies on earthy tones, with ochre, deep greens, and browns defining the terrain and vegetation. The sky, rendered with soft blue tones and light clouds, provides a contrast to the shadowed foreground. Pynas employs a meticulous approach to the foliage, with individual leaves and branches rendered with precision. The inclusion of small, distant figures on the path adds a sense of scale to the expansive environment. This painting reflects the period's fascination with combining historical or religious subjects with the natural world, a genre that gained popularity among collectors in the early seventeenth century. The work remains an example of the transition between the mannerist traditions of the previous century and the more naturalistic approach that would define the Dutch Golden Age.
