A powerful 1889 oil painting by Vincent van Gogh, featuring swirling, expressive brushwork and a rural scene in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Painted in 1889, this work captures the rural surroundings near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Vincent van Gogh employed his characteristic impasto technique, applying paint in thick, rhythmic strokes that animate the surface of the canvas. The composition is dominated by three central trees, their branches twisting with a sense of kinetic energy against a turbulent, deep-toned sky. To the left, a small house with a red roof provides a stable, geometric counterpoint to the organic, swirling forms of the vegetation.
The colour palette relies on contrasting tones of deep green, earthy brown, and touches of white, which suggest the play of light through the foliage. Van Gogh used these colours to convey the physical sensation of the wind moving through the trees, rather than a static representation of the scene. The ground is rendered with directional brushwork that leads the eye across the foreground, creating a sense of physical texture and depth.
This piece reflects the artist's focus on the emotional resonance of nature during his time in the south of France. By distorting the forms of the trees and the terrain, he moved away from traditional observational painting toward a more subjective interpretation of the environment. The heavy application of paint and the visible direction of each stroke demonstrate his interest in the materiality of the medium. This work remains a clear example of his mature style, where colour and line function together to express movement and atmosphere.
