Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, was a prominent figure of the Bolognese School. This work, painted on copper, demonstrates his mastery of the classical tradition. The scene depicts a narrative from the Book of Tobit, where the Archangel Raphael instructs Tobias to capture a fish from the River Tigris. The creature's organs are later used to heal his father's blindness.

The composition follows the principles of the idealised classical mode. Tall, framing trees on either side of the canvas draw the eye toward the middle distance, where a winding river leads the viewer through a serene, open valley. The figures are placed in the foreground, yet they remain subordinate to the broader environmental setting.
