A detailed etching by Felix Meyer depicting two figures resting beneath large, gnarled trees in a rural setting.
This etching by Felix Meyer captures a quiet, wooded scene characteristic of his graphic output. Meyer, a German painter and etcher active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, often focused on rural motifs and forest interiors. His work reflects the influence of Dutch and Italianate traditions, which were common among his contemporaries.
The composition is anchored by two large, gnarled trees that dominate the centre of the frame. Their textured bark and sprawling branches are rendered with precise, rhythmic lines. Beneath the shade of these trees, two figures are positioned: one stands while the other sits, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the natural environment. The background opens to a distant, flatter vista, creating a contrast between the dense foreground and the airy, light-filled horizon.
Meyer employs a variety of hatching techniques to define form and shadow. The foliage is treated with a delicate touch, while the tree trunks exhibit deeper, more emphatic strokes to convey weight and age. The ground is littered with rocks and small vegetation, adding to the sense of a wild, untamed space. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance structural detail with atmospheric depth, a hallmark of his approach to the medium. The work is a fine example of the period's interest in the natural world, presented through the technical rigour of the etching process.
