A pair of traditional Japanese ink wash scrolls by Tenshō Shūbun, depicting the seasonal transitions of autumn and winter through atmospheric brushwork.
Tenshō Shūbun, a monk-painter active during the Muromachi period, remains a central figure in the development of Japanese ink wash painting. These two hanging scrolls, representing autumn and winter, demonstrate the influence of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty aesthetics on Japanese art. The compositions utilise the 'sansui' tradition, which translates literally to mountain and water, to create a meditative space through the use of ink tonality and negative space.
The autumn scroll features jagged, vertical rock formations and a small pavilion nestled near a waterfall, suggesting a quiet retreat. The winter scroll provides a stark contrast, with snow-covered slopes and bare trees that convey a sense of stillness. Shūbun employs a technique of varying ink density to suggest depth, allowing the mist to obscure the distance and draw the viewer into the scene. The brushwork is precise, defining the textures of stone and foliage while maintaining a sense of atmospheric lightness.
These works reflect the Zen Buddhist philosophy prevalent in the Shōkoku-ji temple circle, where Shūbun resided. The paintings do not aim for literal representation, but rather for the capture of an essential mood or seasonal transition. The vertical format of the scrolls dictates a specific viewing experience, encouraging the eye to travel from the foreground details up towards the misty, undefined summits. This approach to composition, known as the 'three distances' method, allows for a complex spatial arrangement within a narrow frame. The scrolls are mounted in traditional fashion, with silk borders that complement the monochromatic palette of the ink. By focusing on the interplay between solid forms and empty space, Shūbun achieves a balance that defines the Muromachi ink tradition.
