A refined ink-wash composition on gold leaf by Nagasawa Rosetsu, depicting the poets Su Shi and Tao Qian in a serene, atmospheric setting.
This work by Nagasawa Rosetsu, a prominent figure of the Maruyama-Shijo school, demonstrates the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques applied to a gold-leaf ground. The composition features a serene, atmospheric scene depicting the Chinese poets Su Shi and Tao Qian, figures often associated with scholarly retreat and the appreciation of nature in East Asian art history.
Rosetsu employs a minimalist approach to the ink work, using varying densities of wash to suggest the texture of rocks and the skeletal forms of trees. The negative space, represented by the expansive gold-leaf surface, provides a sense of distance and quietude. A flock of birds in flight across the left panels adds a sense of movement, contrasting with the stillness of the figures gathered near the pavilion on the right. The brushwork is deliberate and expressive, characteristic of the artist's individualistic style which often departed from the more rigid conventions of his contemporaries.
As a folding screen, the piece functions as both a functional room divider and a decorative object. The gold leaf reflects ambient light, creating a shifting appearance depending on the viewer's position and the time of day. This interaction between the reflective surface and the monochrome ink creates a balance between opulence and restraint. The subject matter reflects the cultural interest in Chinese literary figures during the Edo period, where such themes were frequently adapted to suit Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the delicate balance between the stark, dark forms of the trees and the luminous, metallic background.
