A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Guilliam van Nieulandt (II) depicting the biblical journey to Emmaus within a dramatic, mountainous setting.
This etching by the Flemish artist Guilliam van Nieulandt (II) depicts a biblical scene from the Gospel of Luke, specifically the journey to Emmaus. The composition follows the conventions of early seventeenth-century Northern European printmaking, where the narrative figures are secondary to the expansive, constructed environment. The artist employs a high vantage point to survey a rocky, mountainous terrain, complete with a fortified town perched upon a cliff and a stone bridge spanning a ravine.
Van Nieulandt demonstrates a meticulous approach to line work. The foliage of the trees is rendered with dense, short strokes to create volume, while the rocky outcrops are defined by parallel hatching that suggests geological texture. The figures of the two disciples and the resurrected Christ are small in scale, walking along a path in the foreground. Their presence provides a sense of human proportion against the dramatic, almost theatrical, scale of the surrounding architecture and nature.
The print reflects the influence of the Flemish tradition of idealised, mountainous views, often associated with the work of artists like Joos de Momper or Roelant Savery. The inclusion of the inscription 'Luca 24:15' in the lower left corner confirms the subject matter, grounding the imaginative scenery in a specific theological context. The print is characterised by a clear, linear clarity typical of the period, where the artist balances the atmospheric depth of the distant hills with the sharp, graphic detail of the foreground elements. This work offers a view into the technical precision of the era, where the etcher's needle was used to build complex, layered scenes that invite close inspection of both the narrative and the structural composition.
