A rare etching by Hercules Segers depicting a rugged mountain valley and a rushing stream, rendered with atmospheric depth and experimental tonal techniques.
Hercules Segers remains one of the most experimental printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age. This etching, titled Landschap met een waterval, tweede versie, demonstrates his unconventional approach to the medium. Unlike his contemporaries who sought clean, precise lines, Segers manipulated his plates with a sense of atmospheric depth and textural variation. The composition features a rugged, mountainous valley bisected by a rushing stream. The steep, craggy cliffs frame the scene, drawing the eye toward a small, distant village nestled in the valley floor. Above, a large, circular form dominates the sky, often interpreted as a moon or a celestial body, which adds an otherworldly quality to the otherwise naturalistic terrain.
Segers frequently experimented with different printing surfaces and ink colours, often applying paint by hand to his impressions. This specific work displays his mastery of tonal etching, where he used fine, dense hatching to create shadows and volume. The jagged rock formations are rendered with a tactile quality, suggesting the harshness of the geological features. His work influenced later artists, including Rembrandt, who collected several of Segers's prints. The print reflects a fascination with the sublime, moving away from the typical topographical accuracy of the period toward a more imaginative, psychological interpretation of nature. The interplay between the dark, heavy rocks and the lighter, expansive sky creates a sense of isolation and quietude. This print is a fine example of his technical innovation, showing how he pushed the boundaries of the etching process to achieve painterly effects on paper.
