A detailed etching by Jan Smees featuring a classical ruin and a pastoral scene with a shepherd and sheep.
This etching by Jan Smees depicts a classical ruin situated above a small waterfall. The composition follows the conventions of Dutch Italianate art, where artists integrated Mediterranean architectural motifs into their work. The crumbling stone structure, featuring a prominent archway, dominates the right side of the frame. Vegetation clings to the masonry, suggesting the passage of time and the reclamation of human construction by nature.
In the foreground, a shepherd rests near a small flock of sheep, providing a sense of scale and pastoral quietude. The water flows over a rocky ledge, creating a transition between the elevated ruins and the lower ground. Smees employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the stone, the foliage, and the water. The sky remains largely unworked, allowing the focus to stay on the architectural and natural elements of the scene.
Smees was active in the early eighteenth century, a period when the influence of earlier Dutch masters who had travelled to Italy remained strong. His work reflects an interest in the picturesque qualities of decay and the juxtaposition of man-made forms with natural features. The print demonstrates a technical proficiency in line work, using cross-hatching to build shadow and depth within the ruins. This piece is characteristic of the period's output, which often sought to evoke a sense of nostalgia for classical antiquity through the medium of printmaking. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and serves as an example of the print culture that circulated throughout the Netherlands during this era.
