Jacobus Theodorus Abels, a Dutch painter active during the nineteenth century, is recognised for his atmospheric depictions of the Dutch countryside. The composition focuses on the interplay between the expansive, cloud-filled sky and the reflective surface of the water, a hallmark of the Dutch tradition of marine and river painting.
The scene features small sailing vessels moored near the bank, where figures are gathered under the shelter of trees.
