Maria Bilders-van Bosse was a prominent member of the Hague School, a group of artists active in the Netherlands during the late nineteenth century. This movement prioritised the observation of atmospheric conditions and the subtle variations of light in the Dutch countryside. In this watercolour, the artist captures the fleeting transition of a sunset over a low-lying horizon.

The composition is defined by a horizontal emphasis, drawing the eye across the darkened foreground towards the luminous disc of the sun.
