A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Raphael Morghen, depicting a portrait of Laura, the muse of Petrarch, rendered with precise line work.
This fine engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts a woman traditionally identified as Laura, the muse of the poet Petrarch. The composition is based on a historical interpretation of the figure, often associated with the style of Simone Martini. Morghen, a master of the burin, employs precise cross-hatching and delicate line work to render the textures of the subject's veil, the fabric of her bodice, and the soft modelling of her features. The print captures the quiet, contemplative expression characteristic of early Renaissance portraiture, translated through the technical rigour of the nineteenth-century Italian school.
The subject is shown in a half-length pose, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. She wears a simple head covering and a necklace with a pendant, elements that suggest a modest, courtly attire. The background is rendered with a dense, uniform texture, which pushes the figure forward and creates a clear separation between the subject and the surrounding space. Below the image, the inscription 'BEATI GLI OCCHI, CHE LA VIDER VIVA' (Blessed are the eyes that saw her alive) references the Petrarchan tradition, linking the visual representation to the literary history of the figure.
Morghen was highly regarded for his ability to translate paintings into the medium of engraving, often working from works held in Italian collections. His approach prioritised clarity of form and a balanced tonal range, avoiding excessive ornamentation in favour of a disciplined, academic finish. This print demonstrates his capacity to maintain the spirit of the original source while applying the systematic techniques of his own era. The work is presented on a clean, wide margin, typical of the period's print culture, allowing the viewer to focus on the technical execution of the portrait.
