An eighteenth-century engraving by Pietro Antonio Pazzi depicting the Renaissance painter Lavinia Fontana in period attire.
This engraving by Pietro Antonio Pazzi depicts the Bolognese painter Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614). Pazzi, an Italian engraver active in Florence during the eighteenth century, produced this work as part of a series documenting historical figures and artists. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for biographical prints of the period.
Lavinia Fontana is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the high-collared ruff characteristic of late sixteenth-century fashion. The artist captures the texture of the lace and the structured fabric of her bodice through precise, rhythmic hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The lighting is directed to emphasise the contours of her face, providing a clear likeness that aligns with contemporary descriptions of her appearance.
Below the oval portrait, the inscription identifies the subject as 'Lavinia Fontana Pittrice', acknowledging her professional status as a painter. The print reflects the eighteenth-century interest in cataloguing the lives of earlier masters, often drawing upon existing painted portraits to create these graphic reproductions. Pazzi's technical skill is evident in the subtle tonal transitions across the subject's clothing and the clarity of the facial features. The composition remains balanced and formal, adhering to the standard portraiture formats used in European print culture during the mid-eighteenth century. This print serves as a record of Fontana's appearance and her recognition within the history of art, preserved through the medium of copperplate engraving.
