A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Friedrich Eduard Eichens, depicting Titian's daughter in a classic, poised portrait.
This fine engraving by Friedrich Eduard Eichens reproduces the celebrated painting by the Venetian master Titian. Eichens, a German engraver known for his technical precision, captures the grace of the original composition through a meticulous application of line and tone. The subject is Lavinia Vecellio, the daughter of Titian, depicted in a moment of quiet poise as she holds a heavy dish of fruit aloft. Her gaze is directed towards the viewer, creating a direct engagement that transcends the centuries between the original painting and this nineteenth-century interpretation.
The composition relies on the contrast between the figure and the background. Lavinia wears a gown of patterned fabric, rendered with careful attention to the play of light across the folds. Her posture, with one arm raised to support the platter, allows for an elegant display of the textile design and the jewellery adorning her hair and neck. Behind her, a heavy curtain provides a vertical anchor, while a glimpse of a distant, rolling horizon offers a sense of spatial depth.
Eichens employs a range of tonal values to translate the warmth of Titian's original oil colours into the monochrome medium of engraving. By varying the density and direction of his lines, he suggests the texture of the fruit, the softness of the skin, and the weight of the fabric. This work reflects the nineteenth-century practice of disseminating the visual language of the Old Masters through high-quality printmaking. It remains a study in the translation of classical portraiture into a graphic format, maintaining the poise and dignity of the original subject while demonstrating the technical skill of the engraver.
