A 1907 Neo-Impressionist oil painting by Paul Signac, capturing the Golden Horn in Istanbul through his signature divisionist technique of distinct, luminous colour strokes.
Paul Signac painted Le Corne d'Or, Le Pont in 1907 during his travels to Istanbul. This work demonstrates his mature application of Neo-Impressionist theory, specifically the divisionist technique. Signac utilised small, distinct touches of pure colour, applied in a mosaic-like pattern across the canvas, to construct the form of the sailing vessel and the surrounding harbour. Rather than mixing pigments on the palette, he relied on the optical blending that occurs in the viewer's eye.
The composition features a large ship in the foreground, its sails and hull rendered in a spectrum of yellows, oranges, and blues. The background reveals the silhouette of the city skyline, including the minarets and domes characteristic of the Golden Horn. The water reflects the sky and the vessel, creating a unified surface where the light appears to shimmer. Signac moved away from the smaller, tighter dots of his earlier career towards larger, more rectangular brushstrokes, which provide a rhythmic quality to the surface of the painting.
This piece captures the atmosphere of the Mediterranean light, a subject that occupied Signac for much of his later life. The colour palette is deliberate, balancing warm tones in the boat with cooler, atmospheric hues in the sky and water. However, Signac's contribution to the development and popularisation of this revolutionary technique is undeniable. Born in Paris in 1863, he initially trained as an architect before finding his true calling in painting. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Signac came from a relatively wealthy background, allowing him the freedom to pursue his artistic passions without the immediate pressure of commercial success.
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France.
