A 1928 Purist still life by Le Corbusier, featuring a tabletop arrangement of everyday objects rendered with geometric clarity and a muted palette.
Le déjeuner près du phare, painted in 1928, represents the mature phase of Le Corbusier's engagement with Purism. Alongside his collaborator Amédée Ozenfant, Le Corbusier sought to strip painting of decorative excess, favouring a return to clear, geometric forms and a rationalised approach to composition. This work displays the characteristic Purist interest in everyday objects, rendered with a sense of order and structural clarity.
The composition is anchored by a tabletop arrangement of common items: a bowl, a fork, a spoon, and a knife. These objects are not depicted with photographic realism, but rather as simplified, archetypal shapes. The artist employs a muted, controlled palette, which serves to emphasise the formal relationships between the items rather than their individual textures or material qualities. The shadows are cast with mathematical precision, reinforcing the sense of a constructed, rather than observed, reality.
In the lower portion of the canvas, a small, distant lighthouse appears, providing the title and a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the flattened, frontal perspective of the table. This inclusion of a distant element is a recurring device in his work, creating a dialogue between the immediate, tangible objects of the foreground and the broader, architectural environment. The painting reflects the artist's broader philosophy, which prioritised the harmony of proportions and the clarity of form. By reducing the visual field to these essential components, Le Corbusier invites the viewer to consider the underlying geometry of the world. The work remains a clear example of his attempt to reconcile the principles of modern architecture with the traditions of the still life genre, maintaining a balance between abstraction and representation.
