A refined eighteenth-century etching by Jean Moyreau after Antoine Watteau, depicting a shivering Pierrot figure framed by elegant Rococo ornamentation.
This etching, titled Le Frileux, is a work by the French engraver Jean Moyreau, based on an original composition by Antoine Watteau. The print depicts a figure dressed in the traditional costume of a Pierrot, standing with arms crossed against the cold. The character holds a staff, his posture conveying a sense of shivering discomfort. The central figure is framed by an elaborate decorative border, a hallmark of the Rococo period, featuring swags, floral motifs, and scrollwork that draw the eye toward the subject.
Below the figure, the composition includes a secondary decorative element featuring a theatrical mask and a dagger, symbols often associated with the commedia dell'arte tradition that Watteau frequently explored in his work. The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical skill of Moyreau, who was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of Watteau into the medium of print. The inclusion of the phrase 'avec Privilege du Roy' at the bottom indicates that this print was produced under royal authority, a common practice for high-quality engravings in eighteenth-century France.
This piece offers a glimpse into the theatrical interests of the French aristocracy during the early eighteenth century. The combination of the central figure and the surrounding ornamental frame creates a balanced, structured image that reflects the aesthetic preferences of the era. The print serves as a record of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers, where the latter played a role in the dissemination of artistic ideas across Europe. The clean lines and clear composition make this an example of the graphic arts from the period, capturing both the character study of the figure and the decorative sensibilities of the time.
