An abstract composition by Jacques Villon, 'Le mois de mai' uses geometric forms and a muted palette to create a Cubist representation of a tree or plant.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known for his printmaking. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon developed his own distinct style of Cubism, characterised by geometric forms and a muted colour palette. He was a member of the Section d'Or group, which sought to apply mathematical principles to art. 'Le mois de mai' ('The Month of May') is an oil on canvas painting that exemplifies Villon's abstract style. The composition is built from geometric shapes, predominantly rectangles and triangles, arranged to suggest a tree or plant form. The colour scheme is restrained, featuring pastel shades of yellow, green, pink, and grey, with touches of red and black. The background is a patchwork of light blue and white, resembling a mosaic. The overall effect is one of fragmented representation, typical of Cubist art, where the subject is broken down into its constituent parts and reassembled on the canvas.
