A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a caricature of a monk adorned with playing cards, accompanied by a cynical French verse.
Jacob Gole, a Dutch engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam, produced this mezzotint during the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. The work depicts a caricature of a monk, identified by the inscription as Le Pere Ignace. The subject is shown in profile, displaying exaggerated facial features, including a prominent, bulbous nose and a weathered, lined complexion. The monk wears a habit adorned with playing cards, a visual device that suggests a satirical commentary on the hypocrisy or worldly vices of the clergy.
The mezzotint technique allows for a smooth transition between light and shadow, creating a soft, tonal quality that defines the contours of the face and the texture of the beard. The circular composition focuses the viewer on the profile, while the text below provides a cynical verse in French. The poem translates roughly to a claim that the monk pulls chestnuts from the fire and souls from Purgatory, yet remains unconcerned with Hell as long as he has health and good wine. This type of satirical print was popular in the Netherlands, where artists often used humour to critique social and religious institutions.
Gole was known for his skill in mezzotint, a process that involves roughening a copper plate to hold ink, allowing for deep blacks and subtle greys. This print is a fine example of the genre, demonstrating the technical precision required to render the fine details of the monk's expression and the specific patterns on the playing cards. The work remains a curious piece of social history, capturing the irreverent spirit of the period through the medium of printmaking.
