A detailed 1850 etching by Charles Meryon depicting the Petit Pont in Paris with the towers of Notre-Dame in the background.
Charles Meryon produced this etching, Le Petit Pont, in 1850. It depicts a view of the Petit Pont in Paris, with the towers of Notre-Dame rising in the background. Meryon was a central figure in the nineteenth-century revival of etching, and this work forms part of his celebrated series, Eaux-fortes sur Paris. The composition balances the heavy, dark masonry of the bridge and the adjacent buildings against the lighter, atmospheric sky.
Meryon utilised a precise, controlled line to define the architectural elements. The contrast between the deep shadows beneath the bridge arches and the sunlit quay creates a sense of physical weight and spatial depth. Small figures are placed along the riverbank, providing a sense of scale to the imposing medieval structures. The artist focused on the texture of the stone and the reflection of the buildings in the Seine, capturing a specific moment in the urban environment of mid-nineteenth-century Paris.
This print demonstrates Meryon's technical skill with the copper plate. He avoided the soft, painterly approach common in the period, opting instead for a rigorous, linear style that emphasises the structural integrity of the city. The work reflects his interest in the history of Paris, particularly the older districts that were undergoing significant changes during this era. His ability to imbue architectural subjects with a distinct mood remains a defining characteristic of his output. This museum-grade print reproduces the fine detail and tonal range of the original etching, preserving the clarity of Meryon's line work.
