A masterful etching by Charles Meryon, capturing the architectural character of Paris through a dramatic, framed perspective of the Pont au Change.
Charles Meryon produced this etching as part of his celebrated series, Eaux-fortes sur Paris. The composition employs a dramatic framing device, where the viewer looks through the dark, heavy arch of the Pont Notre-Dame to observe the Pont au Change beyond. This technique creates a strong sense of spatial depth, contrasting the shadowed foreground with the illuminated cityscape in the distance.
Meryon possessed a meticulous approach to line work. He captured the texture of stone masonry, the reflection of light on the Seine, and the architectural details of the buildings with precision. The inclusion of small figures along the riverbank provides a sense of scale, while the hanging ropes and bucket suspended from the arch add an element of mystery to the scene. His work often reflects the atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century Paris, a city undergoing significant urban transformation during this period.
This print demonstrates the artist's technical mastery of the etching process. By varying the density of his cross-hatching, Meryon achieved a wide range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the archway to the delicate, pale sky. The work avoids sentimentality, focusing instead on the structural reality of the urban environment. It remains a primary example of how printmaking can convey the character of a city through careful observation and disciplined execution. The composition balances the weight of the stone architecture with the fluidity of the water, resulting in a balanced, structured image that invites close inspection of its many details.
