A detailed etching by Auguste Louis Lepère depicting a tranquil scene at the bridge of Poissy, featuring a resting figure and river vessels.
Auguste Louis Lepère was a master of the graphic arts, known for his technical precision in wood engraving and etching. This work, Le Pont de Poissy, captures a quiet moment along the Seine. The composition is anchored by the heavy, textured trunks of trees in the foreground, which frame the view of the stone bridge stretching across the water. Lepère employs a variety of line weights to distinguish between the rough bark of the trees, the calm surface of the river, and the architectural details of the bridge arches in the distance.
In the lower right, a figure rests against a stone marker, providing a sense of scale and human presence to the scene. A small boat is moored near the bank, while other vessels drift on the water, suggesting the daily activity of the river. The artist uses cross-hatching and short, rhythmic strokes to create depth and shadow, particularly within the foliage and the structure of the floating house. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the atmospheric quality of the day, from the light reflecting on the water to the shaded areas beneath the trees.
Lepère was instrumental in the revival of original printmaking in France during the late nineteenth century. His work often documented the changing urban and rural environments of the period. By focusing on the interplay of light and form, he produced images that are both descriptive and evocative. This etching demonstrates his ability to balance technical rigour with a naturalistic observation of his surroundings. The print offers a glimpse into the life of the Seine, preserved through the careful application of ink on paper. It remains a fine example of the printmaking traditions that defined the era.
