A detailed lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting soldiers discussing the harsh realities of military life during the Napoleonic era.
Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet was a French illustrator and lithographer known for his depictions of the Napoleonic Wars and military life. This lithograph, titled 'Le Représentant a dit: Avec du fer et du pain on peut aller en Chine... il n'a pas parlé de chaussures', captures a moment of grim humour among soldiers. The scene depicts a group of infantrymen, their uniforms and equipment rendered with precise detail, standing in a desolate, rugged terrain. The central figure gestures upwards, while his companions listen, their expressions conveying the fatigue and stoicism typical of Raffet's military subjects.
The caption below the image provides the context for the soldiers' conversation. It translates to: 'The Representative has said: With iron and bread one can go to China... he did not speak of shoes.' This commentary reflects the disconnect between the grand strategic pronouncements of political leaders and the harsh, practical realities faced by the rank-and-file soldier. Raffet uses the lithographic medium to create a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of the soldiers' shakos to the lighter, atmospheric treatment of the distant hills.
Raffet's work is characterised by his ability to humanise the military experience. Rather than focusing solely on the glory of battle, he often turned his attention to the daily hardships of the campaign. His technical skill in lithography allowed him to capture the textures of wool, leather, and metal, providing a realistic account of mid-nineteenth-century military equipment. This print is a characteristic example of his output, which served to document the Napoleonic era for a public that remained fascinated by the period long after the Emperor's fall. The composition is balanced, drawing the viewer's eye to the central group of soldiers, while the background provides a sense of the vast, unforgiving environment in which these men operated.
