A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a figure of duplicity, holding fire and water to represent religious discord.
This mezzotint by Jacob Gole, titled Le Séditieux, captures a figure embodying duplicity and religious discord. The circular composition focuses on a man, dressed in monastic attire, who holds a flame in one hand and water in the other. A knife is tucked into his hood, reinforcing the theme of hidden danger and betrayal. The visual narrative is supported by the French verse inscribed below, which describes a character who offers conflicting promises to Huguenots and Romans alike, inciting conflict between them.
Gole was a skilled engraver and publisher based in Amsterdam, known for his technical proficiency in the mezzotint process. This technique allowed for subtle gradations of tone, which Gole uses here to model the man's expressive, almost grotesque features. The lighting is dramatic, casting deep shadows that define the subject's furrowed brow and suspicious expression. The work functions as a political or social satire, common in the print culture of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where allegorical figures were used to comment on the religious tensions of the era.
The print is part of a series exploring various human archetypes or vices. The circular framing provides a focused, medallion-like quality, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject's contradictory actions. The fine texture of the mezzotint creates a soft, velvety appearance, contrasting with the sharp, biting nature of the subject matter. This piece offers a window into the satirical traditions of the Dutch Republic, where printmakers often engaged with contemporary social anxieties through caricature and symbolic imagery. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the details, from the dripping water to the glint of the knife, remain distinct and impactful.
