A striking lithograph by Zao Wou-Ki, featuring a central crimson sun set against a delicate, atmospheric forest of calligraphic lines.
Le Soleil Rouge captures the early stylistic transition of Zao Wou-Ki, a period defined by his move from figurative representation toward the atmospheric abstraction that would later characterise his career. During the early 1950s, Zao was deeply engaged with the Parisian art scene, where he began to synthesise traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with the structural concerns of Western modernism. The composition is dominated by a singular, intense crimson orb, which acts as the visual anchor against a diffuse, ethereal background. The surrounding space is populated by delicate, skeletal tree forms that suggest a forest or a dreamlike, primordial environment. These lines are thin and calligraphic, reflecting the artist's training in traditional brushwork. The application of colour is layered and textured, creating a sense of depth that feels both expansive and intimate. The green and ochre tones provide a muted, earthy counterpoint to the central red element, which draws the eye immediately. Zao Wou-Ki moved to Paris in 1948, and this work reflects the influence of Paul Klee, whose own interest in signs and symbols resonated with Zao's exploration of pictographic forms. The figures present in the lower portion of the print are rendered with minimal detail, serving as subtle markers of scale within a vast, non-linear space. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance negative space with precise, rhythmic mark-making. It is a study in light and atmosphere, where the physical world dissolves into a series of evocative, gestural marks. The print invites quiet observation, offering a glimpse into the development of an artist who sought to bridge the visual languages of East and West through a shared focus on the elemental forces of nature.
