A refined eighteenth-century French engraving by Jean Moyreau, after Antoine Watteau, depicting a grape harvester within a decorative Rococo architectural frame.
This print, titled Le Vendangeur, is an etching and engraving by the French artist Jean Moyreau. It is based on an original composition by Antoine Watteau, as indicated by the inscription Watteau Pinxit at the base of the plate. The work belongs to a series of decorative panels that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the French Rococo period, where the integration of human figures into ornamental frameworks was a common practice.
The central figure is a male grape harvester, depicted in a standing pose with a staff. He is positioned between two baskets overflowing with grapes, suggesting a pastoral theme. The figure is enclosed within a sophisticated architectural structure, featuring a lattice-work arch at the top and a curved pedestal at the base. The surrounding ornamentation includes floral swags, scrolling acanthus leaves, and two birds perched on lower branches. These elements demonstrate the precision of Moyreau's burin work, capturing the textures of the woven baskets and the delicate foliage with clarity.
Such prints were often produced for collectors or as models for interior decoration, reflecting the period's interest in symmetry and balanced design. The composition is highly structured, using the vertical axis to create a sense of order. The inclusion of the phrase avec Privilege du Roy at the bottom confirms its official status as a licensed publication from the era. The work provides a clear example of the collaboration between painters and printmakers in eighteenth-century France, where the reproduction of paintings allowed for the wider dissemination of artistic styles. The clean lines and controlled shading are characteristic of the technical standards maintained by Moyreau during his career as a printmaker in Paris.
