An eighteenth-century Dutch allegorical etching featuring a central figure of Instruction surrounded by symbolic motifs and biblical references.
This Dutch etching, published by Jan Bosch, serves as a frontispiece or title page for a collection of moralising allegories. The composition is structured around a central female figure representing Instruction or Learning, seated upon a throne. She is surrounded by various symbolic elements that reflect the didactic nature of the publication. To her side, a smaller figure holds a palette and brushes, suggesting the role of the arts in education, while other putti engage with texts at the base of the throne. The scene is framed by architectural elements, including columns and niches, which provide a sense of depth and formal order.
Specific biblical references, such as 'Matth. XIII', are integrated into the composition, linking the visual allegory to religious texts. The inclusion of a pelican feeding its young, a traditional symbol of charity and self-sacrifice, is labelled 'Liefde des Naasten' (Love of one's neighbour). The base of the throne bears the title 'Leerzame Zinnebeelden', identifying the work as part of a series of instructive emblems. The print demonstrates the technical precision typical of eighteenth-century Dutch engraving, with fine cross-hatching used to create volume in the drapery and architectural shadows. The iconography is dense, requiring the viewer to interpret the relationship between the classical figures and the moral lessons they represent. This work is a fine example of the intersection between religious instruction and the tradition of emblem books that were popular in the Netherlands during this period. The balanced arrangement of figures and symbols creates a cohesive narrative, typical of the period's preference for structured, intellectualised imagery.
