A watercolour by Theo van Doesburg, 'Lena in Interior' showcases the artist's geometric abstraction and use of muted colours, reflecting the principles of the De Stijl movement.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist who practised painting, writing, poetry, and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leading theorist of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; he simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal directions, and used only primary colours along with black and white. 'Lena in Interior' exemplifies van Doesburg's move toward abstraction. The subject, a figure in an interior setting, is rendered through geometric shapes and simplified forms. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by muted tones and a limited range of hues. The composition is carefully constructed, with a balance between positive and negative space, reflecting the principles of De Stijl.
