This work is the eighth panel from the twelve-part series titled Lepanto, created by Cy Twombly in 2001. The series depicts the 1571 naval battle between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire. Twombly approaches this historical subject through a sequence of abstract gestures rather than literal representation. The composition is organised horizontally, with vertical drips of paint suggesting the movement of ships or the flow of blood across the sea.
