A satirical hand-coloured etching by Pierre-Alexandre Wille depicting three elderly gentlemen on a promenade, reflecting late 18th-century French social commentary.
This hand-coloured etching, titled Les Anciens Amis de collège à la Promenade, captures a satirical moment characteristic of the late eighteenth-century French social scene. Pierre-Alexandre Wille, the son of the famous engraver Johann Georg Wille, often turned his attention to the manners and foibles of the bourgeoisie and the aging aristocracy. The composition features three elderly gentlemen walking together, their attire reflecting the fashions of a bygone era, which contrasts with the changing political and social climate of the period.
The figures are depicted with a focus on caricature, exaggerating their physical frailty and the pomposity of their dress. The central figure, dressed in a vibrant waistcoat and coat, clutches a cane, while his companions flank him in deep blue and dark tones. The etching technique allows for precise detail in the facial expressions and the textures of their powdered wigs and period garments. The text below the image provides a sentimental, perhaps ironic, commentary on the nature of long-term friendship, referencing their shared past and the inevitable conclusion of their lives.
Published by Martinet in Paris, this work belongs to a genre of popular prints that circulated widely during the post-revolutionary years. Such prints provided a window into the public perception of the older generation, who were often viewed as relics of the Ancien Régime. The print is a fine example of the satirical print culture that flourished in Paris at the turn of the nineteenth century, combining technical skill with a keen eye for social observation. The muted colour palette, applied by hand, adds a layer of character to the figures, grounding them in a specific historical context while maintaining the graphic clarity of the original etching.
