A satirical 1840 lithograph by Charles Vernier depicting the eccentric fashions of French artists at the Salon.
This lithograph by Charles Vernier, published in the periodical La Mode on 2 May 1840, offers a satirical glimpse into the Parisian art world during the mid-nineteenth century. The scene depicts a group of artists at the Salon, the official exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Vernier focuses his wit on the eccentric appearances of the painters themselves, rather than the artworks on display. The central figure, dressed in a flamboyant, quasi-military jacket and wide-brimmed hat, gestures towards a painting with an air of performative confidence. His companions, equally adorned in exaggerated period attire, embody the bohemian persona that became associated with the artistic class of the era.
Vernier was a prolific contributor to French satirical journals, most notably Le Charivari. His work often targeted the social habits and fashions of the bourgeoisie and the artistic elite. In this print, the humour lies in the contrast between the serious, often sombre nature of the paintings hanging on the gallery walls and the absurd, attention-seeking costumes of the artists. The lithographic technique allows for expressive, fluid lines that capture the textures of the men's coats, hats, and trousers with precision. The composition is balanced, drawing the eye to the central figure while providing enough detail in the background to establish the setting of a formal exhibition space. By documenting the intersection of fashion and artistic identity, Vernier provides a record of how the public perceived the creative class in 1840s France. This print serves as a document of social history, capturing the performative nature of the artist's public persona during a period of rapid cultural change in Paris.
