A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jean Moyreau after Antoine Watteau, featuring a satirical scene of monkeys dressed as soldiers in a Rococo setting.
This etching by Jean Moyreau, titled Les Singes de Mars, is a fine example of the French Rococo style, specifically the genre of singerie. The composition is based on an original design by Antoine Watteau, reflecting the period's fascination with whimsical, decorative motifs. The print features a central figure of Mars, the Roman god of war, seated in a martial setting surrounded by military trophies, helmets, and weaponry.
Below this central icon, the scene transitions into a playful, satirical arrangement where monkeys, dressed in human military attire, mimic the actions of soldiers. These figures are positioned upon an elaborate, symmetrical architectural framework, which is typical of the grotesque style popular in eighteenth-century interior design. The surrounding ornamentation includes delicate scrollwork, floral garlands, and geometric patterns that frame the central narrative.
Moyreau, a skilled engraver, captures the fine details of the original painting through precise line work and subtle shading. The balance between the rigid, formal structure of the military iconography and the light-hearted, anthropomorphic antics of the monkeys creates a visual tension. This work was intended for a decorative context, likely serving as a model for wall panels or furniture ornamentation. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the period, with clear distinctions between the textures of the metal armour, the soft fur of the monkeys, and the smooth surfaces of the architectural elements. It remains a representative piece of the decorative arts from the reign of Louis XV, where wit and technical refinement were highly valued in the production of prints for the elite market.
