A 1897 Neo-Impressionist oil painting by Maximilien Luce, depicting the industrial slag heaps and waterways of Charleroi, Belgium.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this work in 1897. The painting depicts the industrial outskirts of Charleroi, Belgium, specifically the slag heaps known as terrils. Luce frequently turned his attention to the working-class environments of the era, documenting the physical transformation of the environment caused by coal mining and heavy industry.
The composition is anchored by the imposing, dark forms of the slag heaps, which rise against a sky filled with light, broken clouds. In the foreground, a calm waterway reflects the structures and the small, solitary buildings along the bank. The artist employs a methodical application of paint, characteristic of his interest in Divisionist techniques, though his approach remains grounded in the observation of light and atmosphere rather than purely optical theory. The palette is dominated by cool blues, greys, and earthy tones, which effectively convey the damp, industrial atmosphere of the region.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on rural idylls or bourgeois leisure, Luce found visual interest in the stark reality of the industrial age. The presence of smoke rising in the distance and the skeletal structure of a crane or lift mechanism provides a sense of ongoing activity. This work captures a specific moment in the history of the Belgian coalfields, offering a view of the intersection between human labour and the natural environment. The quietude of the water contrasts with the heavy, man-made mounds, creating a balance between the stillness of the scene and the underlying energy of the industrial site. This print reproduces the textures and tonal shifts of the original oil painting, maintaining the integrity of Luce's brushwork and his careful observation of light across the varied surfaces of the canal and the slag heaps.
