A classical genre scene by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, depicting Lesbia mourning her pet sparrow with meticulous attention to period detail and texture.
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a Dutch painter who settled in England, produced this work in 1866. The painting depicts the Roman poet Catullus's muse, Lesbia, in a moment of quiet mourning. She sits upon a bench, her gaze directed downward toward the small, lifeless sparrow resting upon her lap. The subject matter draws directly from the poetry of Catullus, specifically his verses concerning the death of his mistress's pet.
Alma-Tadema demonstrates his characteristic attention to archaeological detail. The setting is rendered with precision, from the Greek-key patterned wall decoration to the carved wooden bench. The artist employs a warm, earthy palette dominated by terracotta and ochre tones, which contrast with the dark, shadowed background. The figure of Lesbia is draped in heavy, voluminous fabric, the folds of which are painted with a focus on texture and weight. Her posture is relaxed yet melancholic, capturing a sense of stillness that defines much of the artist's output during this period.
The composition is structured around the horizontal line of the bench, which anchors the figure within the frame. Light enters from the left, illuminating the subject's face and the fabric of her dress, while leaving the periphery in relative shadow. This use of light directs the viewer's attention to the central narrative of grief. The painting reflects the Victorian fascination with classical antiquity, a theme that occupied the artist throughout his career. By focusing on a personal, domestic moment rather than a grand historical event, Alma-Tadema brings a human scale to the classical world. The work remains a representative example of his ability to combine historical accuracy with emotional narrative.
