A refined surimono woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, featuring a decorative letter-box, a potted flower, and accompanying calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman is a fine example of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and connoisseurs during the Edo period. Shunman was a central figure in the development of these refined works, which frequently combined sophisticated imagery with kyoka, a form of humorous or playful waka poetry. The composition features a lacquer letter-box, decorated with delicate botanical motifs, resting alongside a small, potted plant in a blue and white ceramic vessel. A partially visible letter lies nearby, suggesting a narrative of correspondence and personal sentiment. The print demonstrates the technical precision typical of surimono, utilising subtle colour gradients and fine line work to create a sense of quiet elegance. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the sheet integrates the visual and literary elements, a hallmark of the genre. The artist focuses on the materiality of the objects, from the texture of the box to the soft petals of the flower, while maintaining a balanced, uncluttered arrangement. Such prints were produced in limited editions for private distribution, allowing for the use of high-quality paper and expensive pigments that were not always feasible for mass-market ukiyo-e. This work reflects the aesthetic values of the literati circles in which Shunman moved, where the appreciation of everyday objects was elevated through poetic association and artistic skill. The muted palette and careful composition invite close observation, rewarding the viewer with the discovery of small details, such as the patterned interior of the box and the precise brushwork of the accompanying text. It remains a representative piece of the refined artistic output of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Japan.
