This work is a fine example of Japanese calligraphy from the Kamakura period, attributed to the Buddhist monk Myōe Kōben. Myōe was a figure of the Kegon school, known for his rigorous spiritual practice and his appreciation for the aesthetic qualities of the written word. The piece displays the fluid, cursive script known as kana, which was developed to transcribe the Japanese language phonetically.
