As a member of the Nijō family, a prominent lineage of court nobles and poets during the Kamakura period, Tametada was deeply involved in the literary traditions of the imperial court. The work is presented in a vertical format, characteristic of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls, where the brushwork flows with a rhythmic, cursive quality known as sōsho, or grass script.
