Description
Leverburgh on Harris lies beyond a striped harbour beacon and quiet blue-grey water, with white coastal houses backed by broad green hills beneath the soft clouds of a summer day.
Originally the fishing village of An t-Ob, this South Harris settlement was acquired by William Lever in 1919. His plans for a major fishing centre shaped its later identity, while its harbour remains a departure point for crossings of the Sound of Harris.
Across Leverburgh, low white buildings line the shore beneath dark green hills. A green-and-white striped beacon rises from a rocky projection on the right, with small boats near the distant quay. Broad ripples soften the blue-grey water in front. Broken cloud allows patches of light over the slopes, suggesting a mild summer afternoon after changeable weather.
