Description
Lewes in East Sussex rises around a Norman castle above the Ouse valley, where high stone walls and wooded slopes connect the town’s skyline with its medieval origins.
Unusually for an English motte and bailey castle, the stronghold at Lewes has two mounds. The first was completed soon after the Norman Conquest, with the keep mound following later in the eleventh century, establishing the castle above this East Sussex town.
A square grey tower stands on a steep green bank at the right, with rough curtain walls extending behind it. Below, a blue river bends past pale houses and tree-lined fields towards distant hills. Bare branches frame the near edge against a bright sky. Sunlit grass and leafless trees give the view a crisp early-spring character, before the foliage fills out.
