A mezzotint print by Wallerant Vaillant titled 'Lezende man' (Reading Man), depicting a man engrossed in reading. The work showcases Vaillant's mastery of the mezzotint technique and his ability to capture human expression.
Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker. He is considered one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, and was highly influential in its early development. Vaillant was born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam in 1643. He studied art with Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and later with Peter Lely in England. Vaillant worked in various European cities, including Paris, Frankfurt, and Berlin, before settling in Amsterdam. He was known for his portraits and genre scenes, and he produced a large number of mezzotints during his career. This print, titled 'Lezende man' (Reading Man), shows a man absorbed in reading a book. The composition is simple, with the figure set against a dark background. The light falls on the man's face and hands, drawing attention to his expression and the book he is reading. The mezzotint technique allows for subtle gradations of tone, creating a soft and atmospheric effect. The work exemplifies Vaillant's skill as a printmaker and his ability to capture the human form with sensitivity and detail.
