A historical scene by Sébastien Bourdon, 'Liberating the Prisoners' depicts figures in classical dress being freed against a backdrop of classical architecture and a burning city.
Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) was a French painter and printmaker, known for his classical and baroque styles. He was born in Montpellier and travelled extensively throughout Europe, spending time in Rome, where he was influenced by the works of Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. Bourdon's work encompasses a range of subjects, including portraits, historical scenes, and landscapes. He was also one of the original twelve members of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1648. 'Liberating the Prisoners' presents a scene of figures in classical dress, set against a backdrop of classical architecture and a distant, burning city. In the foreground, a group of people are gathered around a chest, while others are being freed from their bonds. The composition is carefully arranged, with a balance between the figures and the architectural elements. The print is executed with fine lines, creating a sense of depth and detail. The overall tone is one of drama and emotion, reflecting the turbulent times in which Bourdon lived.
